Process Burner Types Explained for Better Combustion Efficiency
An industrial process burner mixes fuel and air and combusts them to produce heat for fired heaters, boilers, furnaces, and process equipment used across refineries, petrochemical plants, and power generation facilities. Burners are typically classified by emissions performance (conventional, low-NOx, ultra-low-NOx, and next-generation ultra-low-NOx below 5 ppm), by orientation (downfired, upfired, sidefired), and by fuel type (gas, oil, dual-fuel, and increasingly hydrogen). NOx, or nitrogen oxides, remains the primary regulated pollutant. It forms when flame temperatures break the nitrogen molecular bond, and it's controlled through staged combustion, flue gas recirculation, premix technology, and lean combustion techniques. Modern low-NOx designs cut emissions from roughly 85 ppm uncontrolled down to 25–42 ppm, while ultra-low-NOx systems achieve below 9 ppm and next-generation units reach sub-5 ppm.
